Commitment to Living Workshop:Leaving OMH site A practical and compassionate approach for responding to children and adolescents with suicide risk.

Clinical Training: Commitment to Living (CTL) is a practical and compassionate approach for responding to children and adolescents with suicide risk. Dr. Anthony R. Pisani developed and tested CTL as a half-day workshop geared toward busy clinicians in challenging clinical environments. The workshop teaches core competencies in child and adolescent suicide risk assessment, documentation, and decision-making.

  • 3 1/2 of training geared toward diverse learning styles.
  • Clinically useful handouts including visual concept maps and documentation examples.
  • Service planning tool customized to meet needs of specific clinical settings.
  • Experiential exercise in documenting risk for suicide.
  • Recommendations relevant to daily challenges of clinical work.
  • Documentation exercises to track progress.

Workshop Objectives

  • Participants will identify the key evidence-based factors to consider in formulating and documenting risk for suicide.
  • Participants will be able to identify options for responding to risk for suicide in a new or existing patient.
  • Given a clinical scenario, participants will use knowledge of risk factors to document an evidence-based risk assessment and formulation.

About the Presenter: Anthony R. Pisani, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor of Psychiatry and Pediatrics and Clinical Translational Science Institute KL2 Scholar at the University of Rochester Medical Center. Dr. Pisani is a licensed clinical psychologist and licensed family therapist.

This interactive training addresses: sexual orientation and gender identity, the messages we receive and how those messages paint our experience. Learn about specific challenges that LGBTQ2S people face like coming out, healthy development, accessing appropriate care and navigating other systems. Issues of heterosexism, homophobia and gender phobia will be explored.

Lifelines Training T4T

Maureen Underwood, LCSW, is the lead author of Lifelines Youth Suicide Prevention, Lifelines Intervention & Lifelines Postvention school-based programs. She is also the Clinical Director of the Society for the Prevention of Teen Suicide and the former coordinator of New Jersey Adolescent Suicide Prevention Project.  These workshops are based on the Lifelines Postvention Model which is on the National Best Practices Registry of the Suicide Prevention Resource Center and American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.  These trainings are meant to provide training to School Based Staff to provide suicide awareness resources for administrators, faculty and staff, parents, and students; develop skills to facilitate interventions with and referral of potentially at-risk students; create crisis teams to review current procedures for suicide and other traumatic deaths in the school community.

Lifelines: A Suicide Prevention Program (Training for Trainers):   Wednesday, June 19, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

You will learn to:

  • Identify the ways in which all components of a competent school community are engaged in youth suicide prevention activities;
  • Review content for faculty, staff & parent presentations;
  • Understand the objectives of the student curriculum and how they are addressed in the lesson plans;
  • Practice teach student curriculum;
  • Use the Lifelines Prevention resources found in the manual and on the CD-ROM.

Lifelines Intervention: Helping Students at Risk for Suicide: Thursday, June 20, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

You will learn the:

  • Essential components for a developmentally appropriate suicide risk assessment;
  • Techniques for engaging resistant students and/or parents in the assessment/referral process;
  • Strategies for teaching the “Tell Me More” assessment technique to school resource staff

Lifelines Postvention: Responding to Suicide and Other Traumatic Death:  Friday, June 21, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

You will learn to:

  • Describe the competent community model of response to traumatic death in the school community;
  • Clarify the role of the school administrator in postvention;
  • Outline the roles and responsibilities of the crisis team;
  • Clearly define the roles of other members of the school community including: teachers, parents, students and community providers.;
  • Customize templates and tools to meet the unique needs of their school;
  • Develop a process for responding compassionately and appropriately when faced with the death of a student

  1. Discuss ways to develop a balanced therapeutic position respectful
    of each client's struggle with suicide and its legacy;
  2. Examine how suicide loss and/or suicidality shape and organize
    relationships;
  3. Explore dilemmas encountered by clinicians treating families
    and couples who experienced suicide, or suicide loss; and
  4. Create a therapeutic context in which families can 'move forward'
    while making meaning of the suicide.
