Rural and Remote Behavioral Health Resources

About 3.4 million New Yorkers –more than 17 percent of the state's population –live in areas considered rural. Rural communities often face barriers to mental health care, including:

  • Acceptability - social and cultural norms, stigma, and no anonymity
  • Availability - workforce shortages, lack of insurance
  • Accessibility - transportation, broadband connectivity, economic disparities, including homelessness and low paying jobs

OMH supports programs and initiatives aimed at removing these barriers.

This short video highlights CORE, which is among the programs helping to broaden access to mental health care in rural areas.
