Prepare a Go-Bag
What would you need to have on hand if you had to leave home quickly? Having a go-bag can help ease anxiety during an emergency. You’ll know you’re ready if you ever need to evacuate.
Fill your go-bags as a household. Check them every few months and replace expired items.
Here are some ideas of what to include:
-
Critical documents and important information in a Ziploc bag:
- Family members’ identification
- Phone numbers
- Home address
- A meeting spot for your family if you get split up or must evacuate
- Contact information for someone who lives outside your area, if possible
- Contact information for doctors, case managers and other providers
- A full change of clothes for each person (maybe more than one)
- Prescriptions and medications (3-day supply)
- Bathroom essentials:
- Feminine hygiene products
- Hand sanitizer
- Non-perishable food like fruit bars or protein bars
- Water for a few days
- Medical supplies – labeled and kept in a waterproof container
- First aid kit
- Paper and pens
-
Battery powered equipment:
- Transistor radio
- Flashlights
- Extra batteries and chargers for your devices
Special Considerations
You may need other items unique to your household’s needs.
If you have a baby:
- Diapers
- Wipes
- Creams
- Bottles
If you have children:
- Favorite snacks
- Games
- Small toys
If you have pets:
- Food
- Medications
- Immunization paperwork
- Collar/tags and leash
If someone is blind:
- Consider using Braille labels for items in any go-bag
If someone is deaf or hearing impaired:
- Have backups of devices like hearing aids
- Create simple communication cards for first responders who may not know sign language
If you rely on oxygen:
- Talk to your doctor about having access to emergency replacements
If you have sensory needs:
- Noise-cancelling headphones
- Ear plugs
- Fidget toys
- Preferred snacks
- Familiar objects that help reduce stress
