OMH Funded Training for Providers

The Office of Mental Health (OMH) funds several training platforms for New York’s public mental health professionals. These platforms provide quality training that address a variety of topics including but not limited to:

  • clinical service
  • trauma-informed care
  • suicide prevention

Our goal is to develop the skills and knowledge of the mental health workforce in the state. Trainings are available in person, online, or as self-study. You can access the Training Database for a full list of trainings offered through our partners. All trainings are free of charge.

The CEU Accessibility Table breaks out which platforms offer continuing education units. It also details method of training, population served, and audience limitations for each platform. The training database is updated quarterly.

TRAINING PLATFORMS

The Academy for Justice-Informed Practice

The Academy is a statewide workforce training initiative for professionals working with individuals who have behavioral health needs and criminal justice involvement. The Academy partners with experts from many disciplines to deliver programs that:

  • Advance innovation
  • Teach best practices
  • Foster collaborative working relationships among participants

Alliance for Rights and Recovery’s: Training Collective (ARR)

The AAR Training Collective Team offers training and technical assistance to:

  • agency administrators
  • program managers
  • direct care and support professionals

ARR centers their work on implementing recovery focused, evidence-based practices. Services are offered at no cost to all NYS OMH licensed and funded programs. Trainings are live and can be delivered to your program/agency on-site or online. They can also customize trainings to fit your needs.

Center for Practice Innovations (CPI)

CPI supports our goal of evidence-based practices that improve mental health services, ensure accountability, and support recovery-oriented outcomes for people with lived experience and families. The CPI hosts resources and training programs that promote practices critical to accomplishing OMH’s system transformation initiatives.

CPI Learning Solutions include:

  • ACT Institute for Recovery-Based Practices
  • Suicide Prevention-Training Implementation Evaluation (SP-TIE)
  • Wellness Self-Management (WSM)
  • Individual Placement and Support (IPS)
  • Community Oriented Recovery and Empowerment (CORE)
  • Behavioral Health Home and Community-Based Services (BH-HCBS)
  • Focus on Integrated Treatment (FIT)

Center for Rehabilitation and Recovery (CRR)

The CRR offers Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Recovery-Oriented training and technical assistance sessions. These sessions combine new information and perspectives, while challenging norms, biases, and systems.

CRR’s trainings include:

  • Trainings specific to PROS, CORE, BH HCBS programs.
  • Psychiatric rehabilitation.
  • Recovery-oriented trainings.

Center for Workforce Excellence (CWE)

CWE supports clinicians serving youth and families by providing trainings in evidence-based practices designed to improve quality of care. Operated by New York University’s McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research, the trainings are free of charge to New York State providers. (You must meet eligibility through an application process).

The Center offers support and training that include:

  • Data management and evaluation
  • Evidence-based practice certification
  • CFTSS provider resources

Community Technical Assistance Center (CTAC)

CTAC provides training, technical assistance, and resources to behavioral health providers. CTAC supports best practices through the development of accessible, evidence-based and informed trainings, resources, and tools. Sign up for the CTAC listserv to stay up to date on new offerings.

CTAC’s trainings include:

  • Clinical care for children, youth, and families.
  • Family and youth peer advocacy.
  • Workforce development.

Evidence Based Treatment Dissemination Center (EBTDC)

EBTDC provides clinical training and consultation on evidence-based treatment protocols. Their goal is enhancing the quality of mental health care for children and families. Operating within the Hassenfeld Children's Hospital at NYU Langone, EBTDC equips OMH-licensed mental health professionals with the tools and knowledge necessary to deliver effective, personalized care to youth and adolescents.

Training Opportunities:

Managed Care Technical Assistance Center (MCTAC)

MCTAC provides training and technical assistance to all behavioral health agencies in New York State.

Training topics include:

  • Clinical service
  • Workforce development
  • Family and youth peer advocacy
  • Finance
  • Regulations

The New York Psychiatric Rehabilitation Training Academy (NYPRTA)

NYPRTA provides comprehensive training that focuses on enhancing outcomes for people receiving psychiatric rehabilitation services. NYPRTA’s hybrid training model combines:

  • webinars
  • virtual office hours
  • self-paced learning modules
  • in-person training sessions
  • virtual communities of practice.

NYPRTA also offers specialized programs including Introduction to Psychiatric Rehabilitation Supervision. Their experienced staff and subject matter experts provide tailored support to help integrate practices at both the program and agency levels.

Peer Support Services Technical Assistance Center (PeerTAC)

PeerTAC offers training, technical assistance, and consultation to mental health organizations. Their aim is to give all people the option to receive Peer Support Services. They support hiring Certified Peer Specialists (NYCPS), Credentialed Family Peer Advocates (FPA-C), and Credentialed Youth Peer Advocates (YPA-C) to work in programs that provide mental health services across New York State.

Project TEACH

Project TEACH supports clinicians in addressing the mental health concerns of children, adolescents, and perinatal patients in their practice. Project TEACH offers CME-certified education in formats including in-person and archived as well as online courses. All services are at no cost to New York State clinicians.

Project TEACH services include:

  • CME accredited trainings.
  • Trainings for non-medical clinicians serving children, adolescents, and perinatal patients.
  • Telephone consultations with psychiatrists.
  • Face to face evaluations.
  • Referral support.

State-Wide Grand Rounds (SWGR)

OMH's Statewide Grand Rounds offer training to physicians and other licensed professionals on the latest applicable psychiatric research findings. Grand Round presentations are approximately 1.5 hours and accessible in an archived catalogue.

Topics include:

  • Recovery-oriented treatment
  • Clinical culture
  • Psychopharmacology
  • Improving quality care

Trauma Informed Network & Resource Center (TINRC)

The goal of the TINRC is to support trauma-informed wellness practices across the state through connection to resources, events, and each other. TINRC is for all individuals and organizations developing and implementing trauma-Informed practices.

TINRC resources include:

  • Trauma-informed wellness practices.
  • Trauma responsive understanding self-assessment tool (TRUST).
  • “Tending the Roots” training.

Resources include:

  • Breath, Body, Mind
    Practice sessions for quick and simple stress relief. Fundamentals and teacher training courses are available.
  • Tending the Roots
    Training that explores how toxic stress and trauma impact health. You’ll learn how to promote healing and resilience. Our goal is to create sustainable practices that support health and equity throughout New York.
  • Trauma Responsive Understanding Self-Assessment Tool (TRUST)
    This strength-based self-assessment tool provides organizations with a “snapshot” of where they are in their journey towards becoming trauma-responsive and equity-focused.
